LEMON BERRY BLISS CORES: FIGHT ALLERGY SYMPTOMS WITH AROMATHERAPY

Seasonal allergies affect 30-40% of all North Americans. That means in a group of 6 people, 2 of those people are sneezing and coughing in the spring because of seasonal discomfort. That’s a pretty significant amount of people.

From February through September, people with seasonal allergies typically experience an array of annoying allergy-related symptoms. These symptoms include:

  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Watery or itchy eyes
  • Sore or itchy-feeling throat
  • Runny nose
  • Headaches
  • Trouble breathing

Allergy symptoms vary in combination and intensity from person to person. One person might just experience a slight cough while another may experience all of the symptoms. And while there are great over-the-counter medications to help with these symptoms, you may want to also look at a more natural solution to ease some of the seasonal discomfort.

Why do Seasonal Allergies Exist?

In short, seasonal allergy symptoms typically erupt due to an increase in pollen or dust that occurs in spring as plants sprout. The pollen in the air enters our body as we breathe, and our immune system recognizes it as an “invader,”  like bacteria or viruses, and launches an immune response. This immunity response results in the symptoms of allergies.

How Aromatherapy Can Help

It might seem a little counter-intuitive to use plants to support your immune system that was just recognizing elements of plants as invaders, BUT many super plants are known to positively support the immune system, easing symptoms and restoring regular body function. So what’s your symptom? Let’s find the super plant to support you!

Lavender & Ylang Ylang for Sneezing

Sneezing is caused by a surface irritation on the membranes of your olfactory system, which is just a fancy way of saying that inside of your mouth and nose is irritated. Lavender and Ylang Ylang have known calmative properties that work to ease irritation and inflammation of your membranes. Both Lavender and Ylang Ylang plants contain a compound called linalool, which is known to have systemic anti-inflammatory effects, reducing irritation and discomfort.

Spearmint for Coughing

Coughing is caused by increased mucus and throat irritation, which occurs as a part of your body’s immune response. For this reason, Spearmint and other menthol-containing super plants are excellent ways to soothe a cough. These super plants help to open airways and increase oxygenation, effectively decreasing mucus production and soothing irritation.

Eucalyptus for Sore Throat

Sore throats are caused by irritation on the surface of the inner lining of your throat. Eucalyptus naturally brings down inflammation and decreases the build up of mucus, decreasing surface irritation of your throat. Eucalyptus also has a natural “cooling” sensation when inhaled that eases discomfort.

Lemongrass for Headaches

Headaches associated with seasonal allergies are in essence a sinus headache. Your headache may be due to the increased pressure in your sinuses caused by your body’s immune response to seasonal allergies.  Lemongrass may relieve pain caused by headaches through its compound called “eugenol,” which has similar effects to aspirin. Lemongrass also promotes the release of serotonin, a hormone that regulates mood and cognitive function.

Peppermint for Runny Nose

A runny nose is caused by clogged sinuses. Peppermint is known to effectively help relieve sinus congestion through a compound called “menthol,” that is known to open airways, decrease mucous production, and relieve inflammation.

Lemon for Troubled Breathing

Troubled breathing is often a result of some of the other symptoms listed above, such as sore throat, coughing, etc. For this reason, it can be directly decreased by super plants such as Peppermint and Eucalyptus. In addition to these super plants, Lemon is also known to ease discomfort. The citrus components of Lemon are known to decrease inflammation, naturally easing pain, congestion, and irritation.

There are super plants that can naturally support your fight against the pesky symptoms of seasonal allergies. You don’t just have to put up with it. It is simple and accessible for you to find relief through the power of these super plants.
