OXYGEN IS IMPORTANT
Thorough oxygenation throughout your body is essential for basic functioning as a human.
Our natural functions all hinge on proper oxygenation–energy, healing, immunity, heart health, emotional health, physical performance, brain function, etc.
Poor oxygenation results in low energy, decreased endurance and stamina, poor cognitive function, dizziness and headaches, weaker immunity, and the list goes on.
The point being, oxygen is pretty important.
HOW OUR BODY COLLECTS OXYGEN
If oxygen is so important, we should understand how our body takes it in.
Oxygen lives in the air we breathe. Our respiratory system brings oxygen into our body through inhalation and sends carbon dioxide out through exhalation. The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the respiratory system is called respiration.
With each inhalation, air flows into the lungs, filling tiny air sacs called alveoli. Blood moves around the alveoli through blood vessels. Where the blood vessels and alveoli meet, the oxygen in the air is exchanged with carbon dioxide. At the point of inhalation, the air is oxygenated and the blood is carrying carbon dioxide. At the point of exhalation, the blood is now oxygenated and the air in the alveoli has carbon dioxide to be exhaled- the oxygen and carbon dioxide have swapped.
Once the carbon dioxide and oxygen have been exchanged, the blood carries the oxygen throughout the body, oxygenating the entire body.
OXYGEN LEVELS DURING EXERCISE
When you are exercising, the oxygen levels in your blood naturally decrease slightly.
In healthy functioning, our body increases our breathing rate to bring in more oxygen and normalize these oxygen levels. In this case, practice makes “better.” By regularly working out, you are strengthening your body’s ability to absorb oxygen. This is why the more you work out, the easier it gets.
If your body doesn’t have enough oxygen during exercise, Lactic Acidosis occurs. This is what causes a burning sensation in your muscles, cramping, shortness of breath, nausea, and weakness during periods of exercise. As you exercise, your body uses oxygen to break down glucose for energy. If your body doesn’t have enough oxygen to complete this process, your body creates lactic acid for energy instead. But lactic acid accumulates in your bloodstream faster than your body can use it up, resulting in Lactic Acidosis. To prevent Lactic Acidosis from happening, and the discomforts that come with it, you need to increase oxygenation. Better oxygenation reduces all of these negative effects of exercise, improving your endurance.
In short, better oxygenation = better physical performance.
