It might sound too easy, but natural plants are a powerful tool to enhance your body’s physical performance. Not complex, just plants.

Seems a little far-fetched to you? Let’s dive into how it works!

Thorough oxygenation throughout your body is essential for basic functioning as a human.

Our natural functions all hinge on proper oxygenation–energy, healing, immunity, heart health, emotional health, physical performance, brain function, etc.

Poor oxygenation results in low energy, decreased endurance and stamina, poor cognitive function, dizziness and headaches, weaker immunity, and the list goes on.

The point being, oxygen is pretty important.

If oxygen is so important, we should understand how our body takes it in.

Oxygen lives in the air we breathe. Our respiratory system brings oxygen into our body through inhalation and sends carbon dioxide out through exhalation. The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the respiratory system is called respiration.

With each inhalation, air flows into the lungs, filling tiny air sacs called alveoli. Blood moves around the alveoli through blood vessels. Where the blood vessels and alveoli meet, the oxygen in the air is exchanged with carbon dioxide. At the point of inhalation, the air is oxygenated and the blood is carrying carbon dioxide. At the point of exhalation, the blood is now oxygenated and the air in the alveoli has carbon dioxide to be exhaled- the oxygen and carbon dioxide have swapped.

Once the carbon dioxide and oxygen have been exchanged, the blood carries the oxygen throughout the body, oxygenating the entire body.

When you are exercising, the oxygen levels in your blood naturally decrease slightly.

In healthy functioning, our body increases our breathing rate to bring in more oxygen and normalize these oxygen levels. In this case, practice makes “better.” By regularly working out, you are strengthening your body’s ability to absorb oxygen. This is why the more you work out, the easier it gets.

If your body doesn’t have enough oxygen during exercise, Lactic Acidosis occurs. This is what causes a burning sensation in your muscles, cramping, shortness of breath, nausea, and weakness during periods of exercise. As you exercise, your body uses oxygen to break down glucose for energy. If your body doesn’t have enough oxygen to complete this process, your body creates lactic acid for energy instead. But lactic acid accumulates in your bloodstream faster than your body can use it up, resulting in Lactic Acidosis. To prevent Lactic Acidosis from happening, and the discomforts that come with it, you need to increase oxygenation. Better oxygenation reduces all of these negative effects of exercise, improving your endurance.

In short, better oxygenation = better physical performance.

Here’s where it gets interesting. There are ways that we can naturally increase our body’s ability to distribute oxygen throughout the body. Two ways to start improving your oxygenation is through working to improve blood circulation and better airflow in your respiratory system.

Improving Blood Circulation

Improving your blood flow means that oxygen will reach its destination faster and more effeciaently.  Because of this, proper blood circulation is vital for thorough oxygenation. Here’s four practical habits you can integrate to increase blood flow::

  • Consistent exercise
  • Massage your muscles regularly
  • Stretch before and after exercise
  • Drink more water

Improving Airflow

One of the best ways to increase your oxygenation is through improving your airflow. With more oxygen entering your respiratory system, your body will have more to circulate throughout the body. The primary way this is accomplished is by opening up your airways by supporting balanced mucous production, and decreasing throat inflammation and irritation.

There are a number of tools people can use to increase airflow, but our favorites are the natural ones: plants

There are natural plants that can help to clear congestion from too much mucus, as well as bring down any throat irritation or inflammation that’s happening, which in turn, will allow you to take a fuller breath of oxygen-rich air.

Plants that are known to have anti-inflammatory and decongestion effects:

  • Eucalyptus
  • Lime
  • Peppermint
  • Ocotea
  • Tea Tree
  • Lavender
  • Lemon
  • Grapefruit
  • Cedarwood

The fastest, most effective way to utilize the benefits of plants is through aromatherapy with Füm™. Fum is a natural and portable aromatherapy inhaler, allowing you to take the benefits of these super plants on-the-go! On a hike, drive, and even in the gym!

Aromatherapy with super plants is an effective tool for increasing oxygenation. Their natural properties help to open airways allowing for a higher oxygen intake, charging your entire body for increased physical performance.
